Where’s the Beef?

Ran across this over at Chaz Hill’s dustbury.com:

”I didn’t claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables.”

And that reminded me of another one I saw somewhere:

“Vegetarian: Native American word for ‘lousy hunter’.”

A day or so on rabbit food is OK - kind of cleans one’s soul innerds. But no longer than that! Gotta go out and kill something, drag it home and hang it over the fire!

Old Faster Than New…

Though this has apparently been widely reported for several weeks, it just came my way this morning. Seems that sometimes, old is better than new and faster than young. Having been a ham radio operator in a former life, I can’t imagine the kind of Morse code speed that guys like this have.

The Writer’s Task…

Thanks to South Knox Bubba where I stole this one:

“It is not the writer’s task to answer questions but to question answers. To be impertinent, insolent, and, if necessary, subversive.” — Edward Abbey

SKB, we look forward to having you safely back in Tennessee. Phenomenal photos of your journey!

A Few of My Favorite Things…

Speaking of ESPN Radio, they also did one of their Saturday morning gigs with Beano Cook, the perennial guru of college football. Having previously lived in Pittsburgh for 15 years, I am well acquainted with Beano and his sometimes controversial, always humorous commentaries on sports in general and NCAA football in particular. He will be 74 this summer and shows absolutely no sign of slowing down.

A few months ago I heard an interview with him while I was driving and unable to make notes, so I will have to paraphrase what he said in answer to a question about his favorite things in life. I’m quite certain of the first two, but a bit fuzzy on the third.

1. Without a doubt, college football.
2. Grilled cheese with bacon.
3. Walking alone on the beach.

82 Days and Counting…

Just heard on ESPN Radio that there are only 82 days to the start of NCAA Football Season! That would put it at about September 3. Bring it on!

And Thinking of Thinkers…

Recently a dear friend and business associate… a thinking man… brought this to my attention:

During Adlai Stevenson’s 1956 presidential campaign, a woman called out to him, “You have the vote of every thinking person!” Stevenson snapped back, “That’s not enough, madam, we need a majority!”

Getting Outside Ourselves…

Thanks to Frank Paynter I think I’m in love again. Not the lust kind of love, but the idea kind - the “Ah-Ha” variety. I was not previously aware of Rebecca Goldstein, but the sampling I have read this morning moves her work up into my “gotta know more” list. To paraphrase Frank, philosophers, theologians and thinkers everywhere - Take Note!

Hell Froze Over…

It is difficult to “eat right” in my job as a network support tech. Driving from one customer to another, spread out over three counties, there is usually little time to seek out a healthy eating spot where I could sit and enjoy a nice salad or whatever. Fast food joints are to be avoided - if the calories, carbs and sodium don’t get you, the loud din of 12 year-olds running and frolicking around the tables will. Where are their parents anyway! Time and budget don’t allow for moving upscale a notch or two.

So as often as not, I find myself skipping a mid-day meal and grabbing another bottle of water, cup of coffee, or my favorite diet drink to savor at 70 MPH. When I do stop, the chosen venue is Read more

Naked Thoughts …

“It is our imagination that persists in clothing things; but the things themselves are divinely naked.”

If You Can’t Beat ‘em…

“June 6, 2005 — SAN FRANCISCO — After years of trying to get people to switch to Macs from Intel-based computers, Apple Computer itself has switched.”

“CEO Steve Jobs announced Monday that Apple will gradually shift its Mac line to Intel-based chips over the next two years. The move confirms a timetable first reported by CNET News.com.”

The rest of the story at CNET.

Hello. My name is Winston and I’m a PC-holic. I’ve been a PC junkie since the days of DOS 2.21 running on blazing 8086 and 8088 Intel processors with 640 KB RAM. My first one had the optional 20 MB Hard Drive, which my dealer friend said I might need some day, plus a genuine Hays 1200 baud (look it up) modem. What a powerhouse! It served me well for a couple of years until I learned enough to build my very own 386 system. If memory serves, that first AT&T 6300 made by Olivetti set me back close to $4,000, equivalent to a couple of months wages in those days. Damn, I shouldn’t be this old!

Once tried an Apple that belonged to a friend. Didn’t like it. Read more

Sense, Reason, Intellect…

Though I am a collector of quotes, a nugget-freak if you will, I had never seen this one until I stumbled into it over at The Untergeek.

Wise Advice for Success…

Betsy Devine’s post today had an exceptionally witty and excellent piece of advice from her mate, Nobel physicist Frank Wilczek, that surely has application for all of us, especially young graduates, as we are confronted with the many choices we must make in weaving our way from one end of life to the other. Highly recommended for the next five minutes of your life! Go now and get it here!
