The Center for Artificial Indifference

Friday the 13th…

As my eye slits opened enough to allow controlled pouring of my morning coffee, I glanced at the calendar adjacent to the pot. Under my breath to avoid scaring the dog, I released a string of expletives that would make a Baptist bolt. OMG, it’s Friday the 13th… So, for me, it’s back to bed until tomorrow. But before I hide my head under the covers, I’ll sip my coffee and scan my daily reads.

Turns out my friend Stu has a blog post on paraskevidekatriaphobia, or fear of Friday the 13th. It is way more than you ever wanted to know about Friday the 13th and the number 13, but most interesting. Recommended…

Ah, irrationality, we’re so irrational we give intellectual-sounding names to our irrationalities. Don’t get me started. I recommend James Randi’s website.

Turns out today is an extra-special version too; the digits of the date - 1 3 1 0 2 0 0 6 - add up to 13; apparently the last time this happened was a few hundred years ago. I suppose that makes the day even scarier…

Doh! More haste, less speed… I just clicked on Stu’s post and he beat me to it. I’ll go back to sleep…

Actually, I am not superstitious about Friday the 13th or anything else. But my grandpa was. Pop would never start any project on ANY Friday, or on the 13th of ANY month. He firmly believed that anything started on those days would never be finished. And on every Friday the 13th he really did stay in bed all day, blinds closed, and scared to death to do anything. Maybe I grew up seeing how ridiculous that was, and that gave me the courage to not be superstitious. Now, where did I put my lucky rabbit foot?

Glad to see you won’t be bedridden today Winston. I’ve never really been caught up in the Friday the 13th thing either..but, I know some who are. Your grandpa sounded like a real character…every family has them. Enjoy the day, and toss a little salt over your shoulder for me…just in case. Hugs…
