No Way Out…
From Arthur Silber, the light of reason, over at Once Upon a Time…
All sentences beginning, “What we should now do in Iraq … ” are devoid of meaning. We are in no position to do anything. We have no potency; that is the definition of anarchy…

Sickening isn’t it. Man’s inhumanity to man. All to satisfy one greedy little SOB’s need to finish the job his daddy could not, and all with hopes of getting his hands on control of some slippery stuff called oil.
For me and for most decent Americans, it is even more sickening. Consider: I helped pay for everything you see on that video. And I had no voice, no vote. Nor did any of us…
I so wish that I could say with confidence, “Never again!” Every time a fascist dictator is removed, through whatever means, there is another one or several waiting in the wings, eager to take his place…
To me, the statement about what we should to in “Iraq” is meaningless because there is no such country, and I’m not sure there ever was. We make myths, then forget we made them and assume they are as true as the laws of physics, then act on that assumption. I don’t expect the Shiites, the Sunnis and the Kurds will ever voluntarily submit to a single government as we have. I don’t think they can ever be a federal republic of states. Let ‘em slaughter each other until they are all dead, or decide to stop, it doesn’t matter to me. What matters to me is that our military has no right or need to participate in the slaughter–and to let young Americans be slaughtered in the process.
Gerry: I second that emotion. You have put a face on it that I had not seen before — the fact that the notion of Iraq is a political construct by the West, grabbed and used for his own purposes by Saddam Hussein, but never accepted or recognized by the major factions resident in that land.
