The Lovers, The Dreamers, And Me…

Sometimes it takes a simple tune to capture our attention. One like The Rainbow Connection, the opening song from the The Muppet Movie (1979). Written by Kenny Ascher and Paul Williams, Rainbow has been covered many times by a wide range of artists, from Willy Nelson to Debbie Harry to Justin Timberlake, but the one that warms me most is the original sung by Kermit the Frog, which of course was Jim Henson (R.I.P.). Kermit’s rendition may be the only song I am drawn to that I would refer to as sweet. The music and words speak to me, calling my name. Lyrics are below the YouTube window, so sing along like no one is listening. Enjoy!

The Rainbow Connection

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that, and someone believed it,
And look what it’s done so far.
What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

All of us under its spell,
We know that it’s probably magic…

… Have you been half asleep? And have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name.
… Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it
It’s something that I’m s’posed to be…
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and me.

Laa, da daa dee da daa daa,
La laa la la laa dee daa doo…

I love the song, and I am with you - Kermit’s version is my all time favorite! I searched for a copy of the original a while ago, and the best I could get was Willie’s version.
Great find and thanks for sharing!

The first verse reminds me of Terry Pratchett’s “Hogfather”,the movie version of which I saw the other week at a friends. The whole thing revolves around belief- and at one point the heroine Susan asks Death if they can’t save the Hogfather the sun won’t some up? Death’s reply is basically that the sun will not come up but a big ball of gas will.
