After tributes to Carlin had been posted on every website and blog in the known universe, my first thought was to do and say nothing. It had all been done and said. But then, in truly Carlinesque form, I said, “Fuck it.” The man was too important to me to ignore. So last night I got the picture posted along with a simple R.I.P. message, knowing that more would come. And this is it in the form of a comment.
For millions of us, George Carlin defined our generation more than any other single individual. His questioning of habits and traditions, his challenge of institutional authority, his mockery of the simple little things we do and say every day — these all cut to the core in a way that no one ever had. He said it so we didn’t have to. He mocked and we laughed, but with a nervous edge because we knew we were in part laughing at ourselves. He helped us see the absurd truth that was our lives, our culture, our selves. Carlin helped us to understand ourselves better so that we might be able to make some kind of sense of our world, and begin to make changes — changes that make a difference.
Listening to him intently and laughing intensely since he and I were young men, this philosopher in comic’s clothes had a profound effect on me personally. His voice is already missed, but if I listen carefully, it is still there. Thank you George Carlin…
God bless George. He’ll be missed.
He was funny. Weather report for Mr. Carlin: Dark now, light forever.
He was on Maher’s HBO program this year and hadn’t lost a beat for his insights and humor. I didn’t always like his specials as he loved to use words that he wasn’t supposed to and that I am not overly fond of hearing over and over either. His last one was on aging, if I remember correctly and had his usual irreverent humor. I felt sad that he had died so early. With his health problems, I guess it was inevitable. Still a loss
George Carlin was one of the few comedians I really felt a personal connection to. (The other that comes to mind is Ellen).
When my kids asked who was George Carlin, I asked them to remember the Little Conductor on PBS’s children’s program Shinning Time Station. Certainly not his biggest contribution, but the light went on for them.
Carlin’s humanity is what made him special and stand out head and shoulders above the rest of what has passed for comedy in the last several decades.
I admired his bravery in saying exactly what he thought. There will never be another like him, unfortunately. A genius in many ways, gone too soon.
I am not one to remember the words to songs, or lines from movies, but I have never forgotten his bit about our “stuff” and needing a house to keep our “stuff” and how much of our “stuff” we need to take on a long trip, or how we still need a lot of “stuff” just for an overnight. It was truly a comment on our materialistic culture, and his insights were funny because they were so right on.
We’ve shared our feelings on George Carlin many times before Winston. Hard to believe we won’t be hearing his wit and genius anymore….at least not in person. What an amazing legacy he has left us. But he left us way too soon. I can only wonder what tidbits he had yet left in his bag of “stuff.” What juicy morsels of humanity he could have passed on to all of us in his own unique way…that made us laugh…and look…and listen; and all with such beautiful honesty. I will truly miss this man.
shit, piss,fuck,cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, tits,
and (over the last 8 years) Bush
A great expanse opened on June 22, 2008 that can never be filled. And Pita Wept.
I loved the “stuff” bit too.
Your blog is interesting!
Keep up the good work!
